The songs failed to chart inside the UK top In , Gervais performed a live tour as David Brent along with a band under the name "Foregone Conclusion".

Gervais and the band performed songs written under the Brent character including songs such as "Equality Street" and " Free Love Freeway ".

In , as part of the Life on Road film promotion, Gervais published the David Brent Songbook [27] containing 15 songs.

It belonged to Stephen Merchant. This was when the pair first worked with Karl Pilkington , who produced the shows and later collaborated with them on their series of podcasts.

In late , three more free podcasts were released. In October another free full-length podcast was released through iTunes; this podcast was originally given out for free during a performance of Gervais' Fame stand-up tour in London.

On 25 November Gervais, Merchant and Pilkington released another free full-length podcast, which lasted just over an hour.

In August , Gervais, Merchant and Pilkington recorded their fifth season of audiobooks , totaling 4 chapters, which were released on 16 September These audiobooks were described as the 'guide to As of May , there are 12 "Guides" in total: Gervais then came to much wider national attention with an obnoxious, cutting persona featured in a topical slot that replaced Ali G 's segments on the satirical Channel 4 comedy programme The 11 O'Clock Show in early , in which his character used as many expletives as was possible and produced an inordinate amount of politically incorrect statements.

Among the other regular featured comedians on the show was Mackenzie Crook , later a co-star of The Office. Two years later, Gervais went on to present his own comedy chat show for Channel 4 called Meet Ricky Gervais ; it was poorly received and has since been mocked by Gervais himself.

In August he made a docu-soap parody, set in an office, with help from Ash Atalla , who was shown a 7-minute video called 'The Seedy Boss'.

Thus David Brent was created. Millman is more self-aware and intentionally humorous than Gervais' The Office character David Brent.

Gervais was influenced by Curb Your Enthusiasm , in making Extras , particularly in the format of celebrities making fools of themselves or subverting their public personas.

As Gervais was not present at the awards ceremony, the trophy was accepted on his behalf by Steve Carell , the actor who starred as regional manager Michael Scott — the counterpart to Gervais' David Brent — on the American adaptation of The Office.

The Guardian ' s Chris Tryhorn explained the "few gripes" he had with Extras , "particularly in the second series".

After receiving a loyal and enthusiastic following in the US, cable channel HBO recommissioned the show for a second series, which aired in , [53] and a third series which started airing in April It is described by Gervais as being about "the life of a showbiz dwarf " and as "a cross between Extras and The Office ".

The show stars actor Davis playing a fictionalized version of himself, as well as Gervais and Merchant. An Idiot Abroad is a travel documentary produced by Gervais and Merchant where a reluctant Pilkington travels around the world, while his reactions to people and places is recorded.

Occasionally, Gervais and Merchant call him to surprise him with a new place to visit or a task to do.

Pilkington reports back to them and mostly complains about the situation he is in. Gervais said there is no planning, a camera crew follows his friend around recording many hours of film which Gervais edits down to about an hour each episode.

To date two series and a Christmas special have aired, series one involves Pilkington visiting the Seven Wonders of the World, in the second show he chooses to complete tasks from a bucket list provided by Gervais and in the special Warwick Davis joins Pilkington on a journey following Marco Polo's route from Italy to China.

In November , Gervais filmed in London a minute pilot episode for a potential comedy-drama series called Derek , which aired on Channel 4 on 12 April The character first appeared in a Edinburgh Festival Fringe sketch as an aspiring comedian who loves animals and still lives with his mother.

Gervais said that the series is about "kindness [being] more important than anything else". He added "It's about the forgotten — everyone's forgotten.

It's all these arbitrary people who didn't know each other, and they're in there now because they're in the last years of their life. And it's about the people who help them, who themselves are losers and have their own problems.

It's about a bunch of people with nothing, but making the most of it, and they're together. I thought about having Derek help old people because no one cares about old people in this country I think it's perfect for now.

Channel 4 commissioned a full series of Derek that aired in early Gervais began his stand-up career in the late s; his first successful show took place at the Cafe Royal , as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Gervais later toured the UK in with his stand-up show Animals. The Politics tour followed a year later.

Both of these shows were recorded for release on DVD and television broadcast. The third part of the themed live trilogy, Fame , took place in It started in Glasgow in January and ended in Sheffield in April.

Blackpool reported selling out of tickets within 45 minutes of them going on sale. Newsnight Review ' s panel saw Animals during its Bloomsbury run and covered it in January They were not favourable, with Private Eye editor Ian Hislop saying it was "cobbled together Fame was the subject of some controversy in January when Gervais told a story, ostensibly about how people will do anything to become famous, referring to the murder of prostitutes in Ipswich.

Gervais' fourth show was entitled Science , and commenced with an eleven-date tour in August at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow.

In , Gervais announced that his next stand up show will be called Humanity. In May , Gervais was back doing stand up in London, starting with some low key warm-ups with cast members from Derek.

The first in about six years if you don't count hosting the Golden Globes. He continued his Humanity show throughout and into ; appearing at SF Sketchfest as part of the tour, which devoted a night in honor of the comedian, alongside comedic legend and mentor Christopher Guest.

His next tour and Netflix special was announced in He is the only British comic to write and star in a Simpsons episode. The episode was the highest rated in Sky One's history; it revolved around the angle that Gervais was the episode's sole writer and the first guest star on the show to also receive a writing credit for the episode of his appearance.

Gervais clarified the extent of his input in a joint interview with Christopher Guest for Dazed and Confused magazine January I'm going to get the credit, but I think everyone in the industry knows it was a joint effort".

Asked in a separate interview about how his idea for the episode in which Homer swaps Marge on a game show came about, Gervais replied: In the episode, Gervais plays a dolphin named Billy Finn who gives Peter Griffin a Mercedes-Benz hood ornament, Peter half-heartedly promises a favor to him.

Soon, Billy moves to Quahog but outstays his welcome at Peter's. Peter tries to reunite Billy with his ex-wife in hopes that he will return to the ocean.

The episode also featured Lucy Davis. Both Gervais and Davis starred together in The Office. Gervais had a cameo role in Simon Pegg 's and Jessica Hynes 's sitcom Spaced , as Dave, an estate agent who mistakenly placed the advertisement for a property for a couple that turns out to be the premise of the show.

He played a version of himself, an egocentic self-promoting actor that annoyed David's character who was desperate for attention.

He also made guest appearances on Sesame Street. Ben, his doctor on two episodes of his series Louie.

Gervais would break into his trademark hysterical laugh every time his character made Louie the butt of a joke. Early in , Gervais guest starred in Galavant , a four-week comedy mini-series, as Xanax the magician.

The show aired on ABC and Gervais got to show off his singing skills. Gervais made a cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live in a Digital Short during which he joked that The Office was adapted from a Japanese programme of the same name with Steve Carell reprising his role as Michael Scott.

The sketch re-creates scenes from the American and British pilot episode with Japanese elements although in an exaggerated way.

Gervais hosted the 67th , 68th , 69th and 73rd Golden Globe Awards , his appearance in made him the first master of ceremonies since His hosting of the awards was controversial for his edgy jokes that were at the expense of many of the nominees, similar to the New York Friars Club roast style jokes.

Talking Funny , which first aired on 28 April , starred Gervais and fellow standup comedians Louis C. In , Gervais guest starred in David Blaine: Real or Magic, a television special where Blaine proceeded to run a large needle through his forearm in front of Gervais.

There are no plans for further episodes of Meets A source claimed, "The Shandling experience put him off for good". Brent obliged the audience by singing his song "Freelove Freeway" with a guitar supplied to him by Lipton.

Another time, he was there to talk about his series Life's Too Short and Johnny Depp who was there to promote his own film was also present.

Gervais is one of two featured comedians the other being Katt Williams in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV who performs at the Split Sides comedy club on the virtual stand-up stage and as an interviewee on the in game radio station We Know The Truth.

For the stand-up bit a special 3-minute act was written, recorded and fully motion-captured. Gervais released a children's book in , Flanimals illustrated by Rob Steen , which depicted nonsense animals.

After the success of this book, he released its sequel More Flanimals in , with Flanimals of the Deep coming the next year.

A new Flanimals book, Flanimals: The Day of the Bletchling , was released in October Pop Up was also published in The Office scripts have been released in book form, with Series 1 issued in , [] and the remaining episodes following in These were essentially transcripts of Xfm shows podcasts and featured illustrations by Pilkington.

Gervais' film career has included small roles as the voice of a pigeon Bugsy, in 's Valiant , [] as a studio executive in 's For Your Consideration , [] as museum director Dr.

Battle of the Smithsonian and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb , and as "Ferdy the Fence" in the film Stardust. The social comedy, was co-written and co-directed by Gervais and Matt Robinson.

Gervais and co-writer Stephen Merchant made a film called Cemetery Junction , set in s Britain, about class, love and fulfilment.

Gervais directed and starred in, Special Correspondents , which began filming in May They pretend to report news from a war torn country but in actuality they are safe in New York.

Gervais directed and starred in the film David Brent: I'll tour it again before filming it though, so quite a way off at the moment.

Before that I have to film my new series also for Netflix called After Life. It's a one-off six-part dark comedy about a man who's wife dies; so he decides to do and say what the fuck he likes.

It's like a superpower. Also, my little US game show, Child Support has been picked up for another season. I'm also starring in and producing a couple of animated movies but since you won't be able to see my beautiful face that's probably less exiting for you, right?

Oh, and of course my Sirius radio show continues in the US, and is available as audiobooks on iTunes around the rest of the world. So my world tour is nearly over.

When it ends in Vancouver in February, it will have been one whole year on the road. I filmed the show during my 3 week residency at the Eventim Apollo in London and Netflix have bought the resulting 75 minute special.

It's my favourite, and I believe best, stand-up tour ever and I can't wait to air it and start on my next one.

I've also gone back to radio after SiriusXM made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I took the Proust questionnaire for Vanity Fair.

Another thing ticked on my bucket list. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Playing with a dog. And we're both drunk.

M What is your favorite journey? I like flying to New York from London. It's like a day off for me. No phone or e-mails. Food, wine, iPod, movies, snoozing.

And then New York! What do you consider the most overrated virtue? On what occasion do you lie?

Always to do with why I can't make a social function. To tell the truth in such situations would be devastating and pointless. I guess, overall, I wish everything didn't sag so much these days.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? I thought babies could swim. Working my way up from nothing without punching anyone in the face. What is your greatest regret?

That I didn't punch more people in the face. What is your current state of mind? I'm stressed about whether my answers to these questions are honest, interesting, or funny.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Wings would be useful. Where would you like to live? I've been lucky enough to be able to choose exactly where I want to live.

I live in Hampstead, in London, and have a little country retreat on the river in Buckinghamshire. If I couldn't live in any of those places, Bath springs to mind.

What is your most marked characteristic? I'd like to say it's my intelligence, wit, integrity, and charm.

But it's probably for others to decide. They'd say cocky, outspoken, troublemaker. What do you most value in your friends?

But if I had to choose just one it would probably be loyalty. Who are your favorite writers? Who is your favorite hero of fiction? In my sleep, dreaming that I'm saving a puppy from a burning building.

What is your motto? No one else knows what they're doing, either. It started really well. I insulted loads of snowflakes at the Golden Globes.

The same night, as I gleefully read the love and outrage on Twitter, I found out that my musical hero and friend, David Bowie, had passed away.

There's nothing I can say to add to the man's legacy and iconic status as an artist and human being but he died as he lived; privately and with unbelievable grace and dignity.

Oh, and he still had time to churn out one of the best and most innovative albums of the year. Let's not even talk about Trump and Brexit. I chose the best and worst year to return to stand up.

It's great in the sense that there's lots of shit for me to rant about, but it's bad in the sense that my "schtick" has always been playing the arrogant, misinformed know-it -all, who says the wrong thing.

It's worked well for me. But now I worry half the room agrees with those things without seeing the irony. It's a tricky one. Humanity is turning out to be my best stand up yet.

I think it's because truth is so important now. Anyway, I'll be touring the show in various cities around the world that have 5-star hotels near to large venues.

It was also the year that David Brent returned. Well, in the UK and Australia. The rest of the world gets it in February on Netflix. That's all I can remember about as I was drunk.

It's called Humanity and the general theme seems to be me moaning about everything in the world from the most privileged position imaginable.

I've done a few warm-ups and it's definitely in the best shape of any of my shows at this stage at least. I also plan to do more warm-ups than usual as I want this to be my best show ever and possibly my last.

Never say never, but with that attitude it will make me put every ounce of my soul into it. It'll probably take over a year to play everywhere in the world I want to play though.

I'll also do the odd live concert when my hairy band are available. The tickets for the two gigs at Hammersmith sold out in 12 minutes, so I guess I should do a few more soon.

That's a record for a British comedian. I should be very proud. But what this actually means is, after 2 wins , I'm probably about to lose for the 21st time.

Did some more new material nights for my next stand-up tour, Humanity , and they were the best yet. They were at the Leicester Sq theatre which is my new favourite small venue.

The general theme of the show seems to be me complaining about people complaining all the time. I'm doing some more next month, so I'll keep you posted.

Retrieved 17 January Gervais is a supporter of animal rights and has stated that he will leave his fortune to animal charities.

Hope everyone likes the actual movie as much. It has a slightly different feel to The Office in as much as documentary making has changed.

The goings on at Wernham Hogg were based on those quaint doc soaps of the 90s, where ordinary people got their 15 minutes of fame then got back to normal life.

Now, reality shows reflect a new ruthlessness towards being famous, where people are willing to live their life like an open wound to stay in the limelight.

Brent is pretty much the same but the world has changed around him. I think people will feel a bit more empathy towards him now he's older, more tragic and nicer than today's average rep in this new dog-eat-dog environment.

He's still an embarrassing prat but deep down he's ok. On July 1st you'll be able to pre-order tickets for the movie in UK cinemas and also pre-order the double album.

I have never been more exited about a project or more impatient to release it to the public. We're releasing the first single in July and you'll be able to pre-order the album and buy tickets to UK cinemas on the same day.

The movie and the album come out on August 19th. I've also done a couple of new material nights recently, in preparation for my first stand-up tour in about six years.

It's going great and I've also been reminded of what a privilege it is, not only to be able to say what the fuck you like, but that people are kind enough to pay to come and hear you say it as well.

So that's the PR tour for Special Correspondents over. Now it's up to you. Watch it on Netflix around the world. Hope you like it. Nearly finished Life On The Road.

We're hoping to do a few songs live at the premiere in August. Come along and wave. As you may know I'm doing a couple of warm-up gigs in May too.

I'm going to really try and not write another series or movie for the next couple of years so I can do a world tour.

The first teaser trailer for Life On The Road went down a storm. I really can't wait for the movie to be released now. Before that though, is Special Correspondents on Netflix worldwide at the end of April.

The second trailer for that was released and again the reaction was great. I'll be popping to New York to promote it soon. The world premiere is part of this year's Tribeca Film Festival which is fucking amazing!

After that I'll fly back to London to finish the David Brent album. I'll also be doing a couple of secret warn-up gigs for my next stand-up tour.

My most offensive yet I imagine. I'll keep you posted. The poster and trailer for Special Correspondents landed this week.

Have a look if you haven't seen it already; In other amazing news, the movie has been accepted into Tribeca. The premiere will be in New York on Friday 22 April and the whole cast will be there.

We won't have to do a lot of press for the movie as Netflix are pretty laid back about the whole affair. They know they have 80 million subscribers and they can tell them about it in an email.

I'm pretty laid back too as I've already been paid. But I hope you like it, obviously. A different kettle of fish altogether is the Brent movie, which is an old-school cinema release.

That one I will have to do the usual begging for. We started mixing the album this week and we have 15 tracks. This means our vinyl edition will be a double album.

How cool is that? Finally, I'm going to do some stand-up. The first in about six years if you don't count hosting the Golden Globes.

I've booked a couple of low key warm-ups with the Derek lot to flesh out the bill a bit. The shows will be in London in May, but I'll give you more details nearer the time.

We've locked picture on Life On The Road. Still weeks of mixing the music and grading, but basically the content is fixed.

We're mixing the soundtrack album this month too. Even though it's by a ludicrous fictional character, the songs are insanely catchy.

You'll all be singing along to Native American and Lady Gypsy before you know it. There'll also be a songbook to help you play the tunes yourself.

It's a dream come true for Brent as he gets to pontificate about his writing techniques and philosophies. As you know, we did a test screening of Life On The Road for people.

After the movie, they were grilled to find out everything they liked, disliked, didn't get, were bored by etc. Most, either found it 'Excellent' or 'Very Good' and the love amongst fans of The Office was off the charts.

They liked the comedy, the characters, the emotion, and they also loved the songs and said they would buy the album and buy a ticket to see a live show.

This is exciting news. Let's hope this is reflected by the rest of the population. Next is a temporary grade and dub to show the film at a test screening.

So, basically, they find a couple of hundred people on the street and invite them to watch the movie. The audience fills out a form and some even stay after to answer more in-depth questions.

Stuff like "How would you rank the film: Excellent, good, fair poor? They take the details of the demographic of the sample and draw conclusions from the data.

Some films score great and everyone gets exited, and some score badly and everyone panics and sometimes even do reshoots; or they can dump it all together.

I don't HAVE to change anything but they're a great thing to do to assess the timing and pacing of the jokes and songs.

Also it might tell me what clips to use in trailers. I'm probably as excited about the soundtrack album as I am about the actual film.

The songs have turned out even better than I imagined and really add to the whole myth of David Brent and his band. I also can't wait to do some live dates.

The show will be twice as good as it was a few years ago and it was amazing fun then. Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

About half way through the edit on Life On The Road and we basically have the movie. Obviously still weeks of fine tuning, grading and the dub, but we have minutes of pure joy.

And a bit of cringe. Well, a lot of cringe. It's been a much easier edit than Special Correspondents in many ways. There were strict, quite complicated plot lines and lots of twists and turns in Special Correspondents , whereas Life On The Road is a fun journey centred around the antics of a bumbling fool.

Also, with Life On The Road we've already recorded all the music and I own all the rights, which really makes life very easy.

I'm obviously looking forward to people enjoying Brent 's return but I'm most exited about the songs. Even though the songs are not to be taken seriously, they are really fucking catchy.

Can't wait to do some live gigs too. Before all that though, Special Correspondents comes out exclusively on Netflix around the world on April 29th.

With my fourth Golden Globe hosting stint behind me, I was straight back in the edit doing my real job. I killed, by the way.

At the Golden Globes I mean. Not texting and driving and then getting away with it. Just wanted to be clear. I know you should always feel this way, whether it's true or not, but I genuinely think that Life On The Road is my best comedy movie so far.

It's not exactly groundbreaking cinema. It has no pretensions or ludicrous ambitions, but the story is a real journey and I think it's funny from beginning to end.

Yes, I have just given myself a very good review. It's always one person's opinion. This one just happens to be mine. It's down to minutes and getting slicker by the day.

My hope is that it's a really enjoyable 95 minutes in the end with some memorable moments and some even more memorable songs.

Or demanding your money back. I'm happy with either as there are strictly no refunds. But before all that my other movie Special Correspondents starts streaming around the world on Netflix from April 29th.

This one, although not as obviously laugh-out-loud funny as Life On The Road , does have loftier ambition and is definitely my most accomplished movie as a director.

It's a sort of satirical comedy drama with a few serious bits and even some action. It's like Woody Allen meets Die Hard.

Forget I said it. It was probably also the most rewarding. It started at the Golden Globes with a nomination for my role as Derek. After the show I flew to Toronto to pick some of the locations for Special Correspondents.

The script was basically finished but I never stopped honing it right up to filming it. I was also writing another movie by this time, that documented the continuing saga of David Brent.

I finished filming on Special Correspondents in New York at the beginning of July and flew to London to edit that movie and start pre-production on the Brent one.

This was a crazy thing to do. Making a movie is a full-time job. Overlapping two movies is two full-time jobs.

It was around this time that they asked me to host the Golden Globes. I said no but they kept trying to persuade me. I just thought it was a headache I didn't need.

They eventually won through attrition, flattery and generosity. Oh, they also said I can say whatever I want again. I'm glad I said yes now and I'm really looking forward to it.

I also can't wait for the world to see these two little movies. I'm very proud of both of them and I didn't have a nervous breakdown.
